Hole 19: Valdespino Malt Whisky, a hidden jewel
Some time ago, the sherry was exported to other countries into their own casks. The sherry was bottled at destination and the casks were used for aging whisky. The casks became highly demanded because the value of the liquor aged into them increased rapidly.
The demand for the sherry casks were increasing and it born a parallel business into the sherry wineries. Instead of sending the casks to other countries, it was the liquor what came to the winery in search for an aging into a sherry cask.
Over 80 years, the Jerez family Valdespino has into their cask Rum and Whiskey coming from their overseas clients whose returned the casks of their purchased sherry wines full with their own produced liquor.
The Valdespino family did not sell the liquor and it was kept it in the casks aging for long time.
About 15 years ago new owners took charge of the winery and decided to put on sale these liquors in a collection with the name Rare Spirits. They launched the whisky in 2016.
The Valdespino Malt Whisky 1430 was aged in the traditional sherry system called "Criaderas y soleras". It is a Malt whisky with an aging of at least 15 years. The casks where the whisky was aged, hold Palo Cortado and Oloroso sherry wines during centuries.
It is a limited production.
